Idenity Theft - Why Students Should Be Concerned

If you are a student and don’t have many assets and maybe not even a job, why should you care about idenity theft?  Does it really matter to you and can someone really harm you? The answer is a resounding YES!

Being a student does not protect you from identity theft. Even though you  may not have a lot of money, identity thef can ruin your future. This is because identity theives steal your name and your history and use it to profit themselves. If you are a student and get hit with idenity theft, you may lose your reputation and a whole lot more.

Even students get credit card offers in the bank and if these fall into the wrong hands, you can have your credit rating wrecked and find yourself thousands of dollars in debt. This is a problem that may take years to reverse. The identity theif steals your credit card offers and then applies pretending to be you. He then has the credit card company send the new credit card to an address of his choosing. Once he has that credit card which is in your name, off he goes to charge things to his heart’s content.

It will be your responsibility to prove that it is not you and it will be you who has to clean up the mess. This is very unfrotunate but it is reality. Identity theft is a messy situation that you want to prevent at all costs before it happens.

The botom line is that students must be aware of idenity theft and work hard to protect their future. Many students feel that they are in an isolated environment and are not at risk of the bad things in the world. This is often not the case.
